Let me start right off by admitting to you that I have stolen this recipe and renamed it so that it sounds better and reflects the general character and demeanor of you, my loyal audience.
The original name of this cocktail, which I came across at a local dining establishment, is called a Spaghett. Yes that’s correct, Spaghett. I do not know what that means or the origins of the name, but it brings to mind pasta and meatballs, doesn’t sound refreshing and doesn’t reflect the inherent German-American backbone of this drink. Thus I have declared the name stupid and from this point forward shall call it a ‘Low Life Spritz‘.
For those of you familiar with a traditional Aperol Spritz, you know it combines; Aperol, an Italian aperitif, prosecco (or champagne), a splash of soda and is finished off with a lemon twist (or a lemon wedge if you’re into that sort of thing). It is a refreshing, light, fancy cocktail that makes you feel like you should be on a yacht. I had my first Aperol Spritz while sitting in a piazza on the Isle of Capri. Molto high life indeed!
But we’re not in Italy are we. Most of my friends hark from the Midwest and when they think champagne, they think one thing and one thing only… the High Life. So this cocktail is for you my friends. You Bears fans, you Cheeseheads, all of you down to earth good people who are proud to drink the beers that made Milwaukee famous. Like it’s high-brow European cousin, the Low Life Spritz is light and refreshing. But unlike the Aperol Spritz you don’t have to be on a yacht or sitting in a piazza to enjoy it. Simply add High Life, Aperol and lemon juice to your favorite glass, mug or better yet, just mix it in the beer bottle itself. It doesn’t really matter, its only a Low Life Spritz after all. Enjoy!
