Try this simple spin on a tequila and soda.
As the thermometer outside crests ninety, sometimes you just want something light, refreshing, and super easy to make. Personally, I often turn to highballs for the answer, something simple like a whiskey and soda. A couple of years ago I got turned on to ‘Ranch Water’. For those of you not familiar, a Ranch Water is essentially a tequila and soda, however to be “quote in quote” a Ranch Water, you should use Topo Chico mineral water as the mixer. Topo Chico’s mineral agua has something about it which pairs well with the tequila, maybe its the sodium or calcium, I don’t know, but I do know that I prefer a Ranch Water over a generic tequila and soda. I share all of this to say, that sometimes a simple twist on something as elementary as the type of water that you use for a mixer can make a difference, creating a unique concoction.

In that spirit, give this drink a try, I call it ‘Montezuma’s Reward‘. Break out a good tequila, I recommend Cazadores Reposado, and mix it with Liquid Death Severed Lime sparkling water. For those of you who haven’t tried Liquid Death’s Severed Lime water, its really tasty. You just need to look past the scary skull logo and the company’s ominous motto ‘murder your thirst’ (though the image and motto do bring to mind Aztec sacrifices, hence the name for the cocktail), and what you will find is a lightly sweetened, citrus flavored delight. Most importantly, it goes amazing with tequila! I think its due to the fact that the water is flavored with agave, lime and orange (a good basis any decent margarita). Regarding your tequila choice, it’s really your preference but I personally would steer clear of Casamigos, Cimarron, or any other tequila that has a vanilla flavor profile. I’d also vote for a reposado, but then again, that’s a matter of preference.
So go ahead and reward yourself! Sit back, beat the heat and enjoy!
P.S if this drink takes off, the folks at Liquid Death can feel free to send me lifetime supply of Severed Lime water. 🙂
